⎩Behind The Artist⎫
"There is no accident, just as there is no beginning and no end....Because a painting has a life of its own, I try to let it live." - Jackson Pollock.
Jackson Pollock overturned the art of painting. Regarded as embodying the American spirit of free expression, he longed to fuse with the canvas to bring about, from the unexplored depth of his unconsciousness, its unaltered expressions and movements — to make 'energy and motion visible'.
Taking the canvas down from the easel, he laid siege to it using sticks, trowels, knives, sand or broken glass. The immediacy with which he painted was as much part of his radical technique, developed to pull out from within a near photographic expression of his inner self.
For Pollock, abstraction was a quest towards self-confrontation. Entering into a trance-like ecstasy he painted with brutal passion, feverish to express his feelings rather than illustrate them. Pollock was striving for pure harmony and famously refuted misconceptions about his art in his near aphorism "No Chaos, damn it!"
