At the height of his art, Hodler began painting the Swiss landscape almost compulsively. From the eternal scenery bathed in morning light, frosted with pink mist, or glowing in red evenings, he captured every variation of dark and bright to bring out the essential beauty of nature.

For Hodler, nature had a mystical quality, and pursuing this essence, he painted it like a portrait, purifying the lines of all superfluous details and transient elements to reveal the original sublimity lying in its most elementary forms. This geometrization of the landscape charges it with symbolic meaning, reflecting an ideal of unity, with man placed at the heart of the radiance, suspended in time.
