⎩Behind The Artist⎫
‘Build me the most beautiful theatre in Germany and tell me how much it costs!’ - With these words, Count Brühl, head of the royal theatres in Berlin, allegedly commissioned Karl Friedrich Schinkel, a young Prussian architect and painter, to design him the building of his dreams.
Schinkel's most renowned works are concentrated in Berlin, where he was tasked with transforming the city into a capital representative of Prussia. While his architectural style can be clearly defined as neoclassical, Schinkel as a theater set designer freely yielded to his concealed eclecticism.
His stage designs for the 1816 production of Mozart’s opera the Magic Flute ( Die Zauberflöte) are set in ancient Egypt and combine Romantic themes with Masonic elements, creating a dreamlike, ominous, and mystical atmosphere, in which the Queen of the Night mightily reigns.
