⎩Behind The Artist⎫

The German painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a founding member of the expressionist artist group The Brücke (the bridge), which he left only four months later due to his drafting into World War I. The experience left his physical and mental health profoundly affected, and after his release from the army he moved to Switzerland, where he visited various sanatoria.

He made his home in a lonely hut at the entrance to the Sertig Valley. There, in the depths of the mountains, secluded from the experience of the 'immediate ecstasy' of the big city, Kirchner discovered a new relation to nature. The landscapes he painted from the Wildboden are filled with his wonderment for his surroundings, where the city-dweller yielded his unrested soul to the overpowering, elemental world shielding him, imbuing his canvas with the stillness and permanence inherent in the landscape.
